Simple. Transparent. Reliable.

How Virginia to Hawaii Car Shipping Works

Virginia sits at roughly 2,500 to 2,750 miles from Long Beach depending on your city, which puts it in the mid-Atlantic overland tier, a 7 to 10 day cross-country run before your car reaches the port. That overland window is the critical variable. We go through the calendar personally with every Virginia customer to make sure the pickup date is timed precisely to hit the right Matson sailing.

If the car arrives at Long Beach even one day after the port cutoff, it misses that week's departure. The next available sailing is typically a week later, which means unexpected rental car costs, extended hotel stays, and a move that got more complicated than it needed to be. That is exactly the situation we coordinate every shipment to prevent.

Pickup anywhere in Virginia

A licensed, insured carrier comes to your Virginia address. A condition inspection and Bill of Lading are completed at pickup. Your $100,000 cargo insurance coverage is active from this moment forward.

Overland transport to Long Beach, CA

Your vehicle travels approximately 2,500 to 2,750 miles cross-country to Long Beach via the I-40 or I-10 southern corridors. Our team times the departure to align with the port receiving window for your target Matson sailing. Virginia to Long Beach typically takes 7 to 10 business days.

Port processing & ocean freight

After port intake at Long Beach, your vehicle is secured inside the vessel hull and loaded aboard a Matson ship. No documents are required at the port for shipments going to Hawaii. Ocean transit to Honolulu is approximately 12 to 14 days.

Hawaii terminal pickup

You receive an arrival notification with terminal address, pickup hours, and what to bring. A final condition inspection is compared against your original Bill of Lading from Virginia. Bring your government-issued photo ID and vehicle registration.

Virginia Pickup Locations & Port Routing

We dispatch carriers to any Virginia address, residential or commercial. Virginia sits at the heart of one of the most active military corridors on the East Coast, which means strong carrier availability from the Hampton Roads area, Northern Virginia, and the Richmond metro.

All Virginia shipments route through Long Beach, CA. Virginia's geography places it solidly in the Long Beach routing, vehicles travel the I-40 or southern I-10 corridor cross-country. Oakland does not serve East Coast states.

Cars are Ready to Ship from Virginia to Hawaii after inspection, documentation, and secure loading for transport to port and ocean shipment service.

Starting Rates by Destination Island

Pricing Tip: Shipping to Oahu rather than a neighbor island saves roughly $820 on ocean freight alone. Virginia to neighbor island shipments can take 32 to 40 days total - plan well ahead if Maui, Kauai, or the Big Island is your destination.

Peak season pricing. Peak season surcharges apply during summer months (June through August) when demand is highest and vessels fill up fast. Book early and lock your rate - a deposit guarantees your quoted price regardless of what the market does after you book.

About deposits: A deposit is standard across all Hawaii auto transport. It secures your vessel space and confirms your quoted rate. For Door-to-Port, the deposit is $600. For Port-to-Port, it is $200. The deposit is applied toward your total, not added on top. What we quote is what you pay.

Door-to-Port vs. Port-to-Port from Virginia

At 2,500 to 2,750 miles from Long Beach, Virginia is solidly in Door-to-Port territory. Driving to Long Beach from Norfolk or Richmond would cost $1,000 or more in fuel and hotels each way, and you still have to get yourself back. Here is the full comparison.

Already driving cross-country

Port-to-Port makes sense only if you are already planning a California road trip before your Hawaii move. For virtually all Virginia customers the door-to-door economics favor letting a carrier handle the cross-country leg.

No documents needed to ship to Hawaii. No title, registration, or authorization paperwork is required at the port when shipping a vehicle to Hawaii. Documents are only required when shipping FROM Hawaii back to the mainland. Bring your government-issued photo ID and registration when picking up at the Hawaii terminal.

Transit Times

Transit Times & the Matson Sailing Schedule

Virginia shipments have one of the longer total timelines of any state we ship from. The overland leg alone runs 7 to 10 days before your car reaches Long Beach. After that, port processing and weekly sailing windows add another 1 to 2 days before the vessel departs. Then it's approximately 12 to 14 days of ocean transit to Honolulu.

The most expensive mistake Virginia customers make is booking too late and missing the sailing cutoff. Even one day late means waiting for the next available departure; typically a full week, which cascades into unexpected car rentals and hotel costs nobody planned for. We coordinate every Virginia pickup to a specific sailing window so that does not happen to you.

Booking lead time: Book at least 2 to 3 weeks before your target pickup date. During peak summer months, 4 to 6 weeks is strongly recommended. Virginia shipments need careful lead time, the overland leg is 7 to 10 days, which leaves little room to recover if carrier scheduling slips. A deposit locks your vessel space and your rate.

How to Prepare Your Car Before Pickup

Getting your vehicle ready before the carrier arrives prevents delays at the port. These requirements are enforced at Long Beach terminal intake and at Hawaii's agricultural biosecurity inspection, run by the Hawaii Department of Agriculture. No documents are required at the port when shipping to Hawaii.

Required: Shipping TO Hawaii

Typical RangeFuel at or below a quarter tank. Required fire safety regulation at all maritime terminals.

Remove all personal items from the interior. No luggage, household goods, or belongings permitted. Enforced at intake and Hawaii agricultural inspection.

Disable the alarm system before pickup. Active alarms cause intake delays at port.

Exterior and interior cleaned thoroughly. No mud, dirt, seeds, or debris. Virginia vehicles from coastal and tidal areas should be rinsed to remove salt residue before pickup.

Vehicle fully operational. Steering, braking, and rolling must be 100% functional.

No windshield chips or cracks.

Government-issued photo ID and vehicle registration ready for Hawaii terminal pickup.

Not Accepted - No Exceptions

Electric vehicles and plug-in hybrids are not accepted. We do not ship EVs or plug-in hybrids on any route.

Non-running vehicles are not accepted. The vehicle must be fully operational at pickup.

No documents needed to ship TO Hawaii

No title, registration, or authorization paperwork is required at the port when shipping a vehicle to Hawaii. Documents are only required when shipping FROM Hawaii back to the mainland. Bring your government-issued photo ID and registration when picking up at the Hawaii terminal.

Photograph your vehicle thoroughly before the carrier arrives - all four sides, the roof, and the interior. This documentation protects you in any claim situation.

Insurance Coverage

How Insurance Works on Virginia to Hawaii Shipments

Most brokers never explain this. The overland and ocean portions of your shipment are covered by two different types of protection, and understanding both before you book matters - especially on a long cross-country haul from Virginia.

Layer 1 - Overland Transport

Overland Transport (Virginia to Long Beach)

$100,000

The land carrier transporting your vehicle to the port carries up to $100,000 in cargo insurance. This covers your vehicle for the entire 2,500 to 2,750 mile cross-country portion of the journey from your Virginia address to Long Beach.

💡

Our recommendation: Verify with your personal auto insurance carrier whether your policy covers ocean transport. Photograph your vehicle thoroughly before the carrier arrives in Virginia and again at pickup in Hawaii. This documentation protects you in any claim situation.

Layer 2 - Ocean Transport

Ocean Transport (Matson Vessel)

$8,000

Matson's carrier liability is limited to the actual damage sustained, up to approximately $8,000 for an average-sized vehicle. You can declare a higher vehicle value on the Dock Receipt and pay an additional freight rate to increase this limit up to the full value of your vehicle.

PCS Moves

Military PCS Moves from Virginia to Hawaii

Virginia hosts some of the largest and most active military installations in the United States. Naval Station Norfolk is the largest naval base in the world. If you are PCS'ing from Naval Station Norfolk, NAS Oceana, Joint Base Langley-Eustis, Fort Gregg-Adams (formerly Fort Lee), Marine Corps Base Quantico, the Pentagon area, or any other Virginia installation to Pearl Harbor-Hickam, Naval Station Pearl Harbor, Schofield Barracks, Kaneohe Bay MCAS, or Tripler Army Medical Center, we have coordinated this move hundreds of times.

Virginia PCS moves to Hawaii require early booking. The overland leg from Hampton Roads or Northern Virginia is 7 to 10 days before the car even reaches Long Beach. Cutting the booking timeline short on a Virginia shipment is the most common mistake we see, and it usually means missing a sailing and delaying the entire move. We work through the calendar with every military customer personally so that does not happen.

🎖️ Military discounts may apply depending on route and availability. If you cannot drop off at a West Coast port yourself, our door-to-port service includes nationwide pickup at your base address. Call us to discuss both options and which makes sense for your PCS orders.

Military PCS Car Shipping from Virginia to Hawaii is handled with inspection, secure transport to port, ocean freight shipment, and coordinated delivery for service members.

What we offer military families

Available to eligible service members PCS'ing from Virginia installations to any Hawaii command.

Military pricing - discounts up to 20% for eligible service members (PCS orders required at booking)

Virginia — and the Hampton Roads area especially — is one of our most active PCS corridors. Naval Station Norfolk alone generates a significant volume of Hawaii-bound shipments every year. With 18 years coordinating thousands of Hawaii shipments, our team knows exactly how to time a Virginia pickup to hit the right sailing window. The overland leg from the East Coast requires more lead time than most people expect, and we build that into every booking.

"

PCS from Naval Station Norfolk to Pearl Harbor. I had a hard reporting date and our team was upfront about exactly how much lead time the Virginia-to-Hawaii shipment needed. The car was at Sand Island Terminal two days before I landed. That is the kind of coordination you need on a military move — nothing left to chance.

Petty Officer 2nd Class M. Chen — Norfolk, VA to Pearl Harbor-Hickam

Virginia Beach to Maui — our team was clear from the start that a neighbor island shipment from the East Coast takes 32 to 40 days. We planned around it and there were zero surprises.

Tom & Angela B. — Virginia Beach, VA to Kahului, Maui

Relocating from Richmond to Honolulu for work. I got quotes from four companies — only Car Shipping Hawaii explained the two-part cost structure honestly. One price, locked. No calls asking for more money before pickup.

Why Car Shipping Hawaii vs. Other Brokers

Most companies quoting Virginia to Hawaii car shipping are general mainland brokers who treat it like a standard cross-country move, without understanding that timing the overland leg to the Matson sailing window is what makes or breaks the shipment. Before booking anyone, ask for All-Inclusive Pricing in writing. The most common issue we hear from Virginia customers who switch to us is that they were quoted one price and then asked for more money right before pickup or at the port.

  • What is the deposit and does it add to my cost?

A $600 deposit is required for door-to-port or port-to-door service. A $200 deposit applies to port-to-port service. Both are applied toward your total, not an additional fee. The deposit secures your vessel space and locks your quoted rate regardless of what the market does between booking and sailing.

  • Can I put personal items in my car?

No. The vehicle must be completely empty. Personal items are not permitted under Matson's shipping terms and are enforced at both the mainland terminal and at Hawaii agricultural inspection. • Which port do I use?

Oakland handles San Francisco, Sacramento, Northern California, Portland, and Seattle. Oakland has a 76-inch height clearance including roof racks and mirrors, measure your vehicle before booking if it is modified or tall.

  • When is peak season and how does it affect booking?

Peak season runs June through August. Surcharges apply and vessel space fills quickly. We recommend booking 4–6 weeks in advance. A deposit locks your quoted rate regardless of what happens to pricing after you book, especially important during summer months.

  • How much does it cost to ship a car from Hawaii to the mainland?

Return shipping from Honolulu (Oahu) starts at $900–$1,200 port-to-port with 12–14 days ocean transit. Neighbor island returns (Maui, Big Island, Kauai) start at $1,990–$2,200 with 22–24 days ocean transit. Call for a door-to-door quote with pickup from your home and mainland delivery.

Yes. Two independent layers apply. During overland transport, the licensed land carrier holds up to $100,000 in cargo insurance. During the Matson ocean crossing, Matson's carrier liability covers up to approximately $8,000 by default. You can declare a higher vehicle value on your Dock Receipt to increase coverage to the full vehicle value, we recommend this for any vehicle worth more than $8,000.

  • Can I track my car during shipping?

Yes. Once loaded on the Matson vessel you can track it in real time at matson.com. We also maintain direct contact with you during ocean transit and notify you when your vehicle arrives at the island terminal.
