Why I Started Car Shipping Hawaii

When I relocated to Hawaii, I went through the car shipping process the same way most people do — I called a few mainland brokers, got wildly different quotes, and ended up working with someone who had no idea how Matson's sailing calendar worked or what the port cutoff actually meant.

My car arrived two weeks late because the broker missed the sailing window. I was paying for a rental the entire time. When I called to ask what happened, I got an 800 number and a hold queue. No one local. No one who actually knew Hawaii.

That was the gap. Mainland brokers were handling Hawaii moves on paper — booking rates, taking deposits, and subcontracting everything out. None of them were here. None of them knew the terminals. None of them had called Matson's cargo desk directly.

I built Car Shipping Hawaii in 2006 to fix exactly that. We're Hawaii-based, Matson Route Specialist, and I still personally oversee complex moves — military PCS shipments and neighbor island transfers. The work I couldn't get done right when I was the customer.

What 20 Years on This Route Teaches You

Hawaii shipping is not like continental auto transport. The logistics are different. The consequences of a missed sailing are different. Here's what matters.

Matson sailings are fixed — and unforgiving

Miss the port cutoff by a day and your car waits up to two weeks for the next sailing. Most mainland brokers don't actively manage this. We build your overland pickup backward from the sailing date.

Neighbor island logistics are a second operation

Maui, Big Island, and Kauai require an inter-island barge transfer after Matson delivers to Oahu. Quoting this wrong — or ignoring it — is the most common mistake brokers make.

Oakland vs. Long Beach is a real decision

West Coast, Pacific Northwest, and Mountain West vehicles often save time and money through Oakland. It's not just about rates — it's about which vessel has the right sailing window for your schedule.

USDA inspection is not optional or predictable

Every vehicle entering Hawaii gets an agricultural inspection at the Honolulu terminal. A dirty car, a plant material in the trunk, or a wasp nest in a wheel well can hold up release for days. We prep customers for this.

Island-Owned vs. Mainland Broker — Why It Matters

Missed sailings are "not our fault"

Ocean freight and terminal fees itemized upfront — Matson rate secured at deposit

Surcharges added at port

Same team from booking to Hawaii pickup
