Minnesota to Hawaii Car Shipping

Ship Your Car from Minnesota to Hawaii - Fully Managed, All-Inclusive Pricing!

Minnesota's carrier market is anchored in the Twin Cities, where I-90 and I-35W create a well-connected westbound corridor to Long Beach. Pricing confirmed from Minneapolis addresses at $600 to $900 for standard cars and crossovers - competitive for a Midwest state at nearly 1,900 miles from Long Beach. Rochester benefits from direct I-90 access west. Duluth routes south to the Twin Cities before heading west. Northern Minnesota and the Iron Range have more limited carrier availability and require additional lead time. Minnesota has no major active-duty military installations, but Camp Ripley near Little Falls is the largest National Guard training facility in the state and the Minneapolis-St. Paul ANG Base at Fort Snelling generates periodic Hawaii moves.

How Minnesota to Hawaii Car Shipping Works

There is no direct sailing from Minnesota to Hawaii. Your vehicle travels in two legs: an overland haul from your Minnesota address to Long Beach, CA, followed by ocean transit to your Hawaii destination. All Minnesota shipments route through Long Beach. We coordinate both legs as a single managed shipment with one all-inclusive price - the number you see is the number you pay.

The Twin Cities are Minnesota's carrier hub, with I-90 connecting south through Iowa to the westbound corridor and I-35W feeding into that network from Minneapolis proper. Rochester has the most direct westbound access in the state - I-90 runs straight through the city heading west toward South Dakota, Wyoming, Nevada, and Long Beach. St. Cloud accesses I-94 west to I-90. Duluth is the only major Minnesota city requiring a significant southbound leg before the westbound run begins.

Get your all-inclusive quote

Call (808) 378-7540 or use the online form. The Twin Cities have strong carrier availability statewide. Northern Minnesota and Iron Range customers should mention their location so we can assess carrier availability before quoting.

We lock your rate and coordinate your sailing window

We go through your move-out date, your flight, and your Hawaii housing situation personally and time the carrier pickup to hit the right Matson sailing. Your $600 deposit locks the all-inclusive rate from the moment you book.

Carrier picks up at your Minnesota address

A licensed carrier collects the vehicle from your door. From the Twin Cities, 5 to 7 days to Long Beach. From Rochester, 5 to 7 days via I-90 west. From Duluth, 6 to 8 days via I-35 south to the Twin Cities corridor.

Hawaii terminal pickup

Your vehicle loads onto the Matson vessel and sails to your Hawaii island, fully enclosed aboard a Roll-on/Roll-off ship. We notify you when your vehicle reaches Grounded/Available status and walk you through terminal pickup.

Minnesota Pickup Locations & Port Routing

All Minnesota shipments route through Long Beach, CA. I-90 west is the primary carrier artery - it runs through Rochester, crosses the South Dakota state line, and continues through Wyoming and Nevada to Los Angeles and Long Beach without significant deviation.

All Virginia shipments route through Long Beach, CA. Virginia's geography places it solidly in the Long Beach routing, vehicles travel the I-40 or southern I-10 corridor cross-country. Oakland does not serve East Coast states.

Cars are Ready to Ship from Virginia to Hawaii after inspection, documentation, and secure loading for transport to port and ocean shipment service.

Northern Minnesota and Iron Range - call before booking

Hibbing, Virginia, International Falls, and the broader northern Minnesota corridor have limited carrier access relative to the Twin Cities and southern Minnesota. Carrier availability varies significantly by specific location. Call us with your address before booking so we can confirm carrier availability and realistic lead time for your area.

Rochester's carrier advantage

Rochester sits directly on I-90 - the same interstate that runs all the way to Long Beach without requiring a carrier to deviate north to the Twin Cities first. For Rochester customers, I-90 access means westbound carriers passing through the city on their way to California can load directly. At 1,820 to 1,870 miles, Rochester is also among the shorter overland distances in Minnesota, producing competitive pricing for southeastern Minnesota customers.

Practical from MN?

Not realistic for most customers

Port-to-Port makes sense only if you are already planning a California road trip before your Hawaii move. For virtually all Virginia customers the door-to-door economics favor letting a carrier handle the cross-country leg.

No documents needed to ship to Hawaii. No title, registration, or authorization paperwork is required at the port when shipping a vehicle to Hawaii. Documents are only required when shipping FROM Hawaii back to the mainland. Bring your government-issued photo ID and registration when picking up at the Hawaii terminal.

Transit Times

Transit Times & the Matson Sailing Schedule

Minnesota's I-90 access produces a solid 5 to 7 day overland leg from the Twin Cities. Total door-to-port from Minneapolis to Honolulu typically runs 20 to 25 days. Rochester's direct I-90 access produces similar totals.

The most expensive mistake Virginia customers make is booking too late and missing the sailing cutoff. Even one day late means waiting for the next available departure; typically a full week, which cascades into unexpected car rentals and hotel costs nobody planned for. We coordinate every Virginia pickup to a specific sailing window so that does not happen to you.

Booking lead time for Minnesota: Minneapolis, St. Paul, and Rochester: 2 to 3 weeks minimum. St. Cloud and central MN: 2 to 3 weeks. Duluth: 2 to 3 weeks. Northern MN and Iron Range: 3 to 4 weeks - call before booking. Peak summer months statewide: 4 to 6 weeks minimum.

How to Prepare Your Car Before Pickup

These requirements are enforced at Long Beach terminal intake and at Hawaii's agricultural biosecurity inspection, run by the Hawaii Department of Agriculture. No documents are required at the port when shipping to Hawaii.

Required: Shipping TO Hawaii

Fuel at or below a quarter tank. Required fire safety regulation at all maritime terminals.

Remove all personal items from the interior. No clothing, luggage, tools, or any personal belongings. Enforced at terminal intake and Hawaii agricultural inspection.

Disable the alarm system before pickup.

Exterior and interior cleaned thoroughly. Minnesota road salt from winter maintenance is among the most corrosive in the country, and it accumulates deeply in wheel wells and undercarriage. Prairie soil and agricultural debris from Greater Minnesota also accumulate. Hawaii USDA biosecurity inspectors check these areas specifically - wash the vehicle thoroughly including underneath before pickup.

Vehicle fully operational. Steering, braking, and rolling must be 100% functional at pickup. Minnesota winters are hard on wheel bearings, brakes, and suspension - confirm all are in good working order before carrier arrives.

No windshield chips or cracks. Minnesota's freeze-thaw cycles cause chips to spread quickly - inspect and repair before pickup.

Government-issued photo ID and vehicle registration ready for Hawaii terminal pickup.

Not Accepted - No Exceptions

Electric vehicles and plug-in hybrids are not accepted. We do not ship EVs or plug-in hybrids on any route.

Non-running vehicles are not accepted. The vehicle must be fully operational at pickup.

Minnesota road salt and biosecurity

Minnesota applies road salt aggressively through its long winters. Undercarriage salt accumulation is a real biosecurity concern - Hawaii USDA inspectors are trained to detect it. A thorough undercarriage wash before pickup is not optional for Minnesota vehicles. This is also good practice for the carrier's equipment and for protecting your vehicle during the 5 to 7 day overland transit.

No documents needed to ship TO Hawaii

No title, registration, or authorization paperwork is required at the port when shipping a vehicle to Hawaii. Documents are only required when shipping FROM Hawaii back to the mainland. Bring your government-issued photo ID and registration when picking up at the Hawaii terminal.

Photograph your vehicle thoroughly before the carrier arrives - all four sides, the roof, and the interior. This documentation protects you in any claim situation.

Insurance Coverage

How Insurance Works on Minnesota to Hawaii Shipments

Most brokers never explain this. The overland and ocean portions of your shipment are covered by two different types of protection, and understanding both before you book matters - especially on a long cross-country haul from Virginia.

Layer 1 - Overland Transport

Overland Transport (Minnesota to Long Beach)

$100,000

TThe land carrier carries up to $100,000 in cargo insurance covering the vehicle for the entire overland portion from your Minnesota address to Long Beach - from a Minneapolis suburb, a Rochester street, a Duluth address, or a Camp Ripley area location.

💡

Our recommendation: Verify with your personal auto insurance carrier whether your policy covers ocean transport. Photograph your vehicle thoroughly before the carrier arrives and again at Hawaii terminal collection.

Layer 2 - Ocean Transport

Ocean Transport (Matson Vessel)

$8,000

Matson's carrier liability is limited to actual damage sustained, up to approximately $8,000 for an average-sized vehicle. You can declare a higher vehicle value on the Dock Receipt and pay an additional freight rate to increase this limit to the full vehicle value.

PCS Moves

Military PCS Moves from Minnesota to Hawaii

Minnesota has no major active-duty military installations but operates two significant National Guard facilities that generate Hawaii moves through reserve and Guard PCS channels. Camp Ripley Armed Forces Training Center near Little Falls in central Minnesota is the largest National Guard training facility in the state and one of the largest in the country, home to the 34th Infantry Division - the Red Bull Division - and generating Guard PCS moves to Hawaii commands. The Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport Air National Guard Base at Fort Snelling in the Twin Cities is home to the 133rd Airlift Wing, which flies C-130H Hercules aircraft and generates Air National Guard moves. The Twin Cities also has a significant Defense and Veterans Affairs presence with the Minneapolis VA Medical Center.

Virginia PCS moves to Hawaii require early booking. The overland leg from Hampton Roads or Northern Virginia is 7 to 10 days before the car even reaches Long Beach. Cutting the booking timeline short on a Virginia shipment is the most common mistake we see, and it usually means missing a sailing and delaying the entire move. We work through the calendar with every military customer personally so that does not happen.

🎖️ Military discounts may apply depending on route and availability. If you cannot drop off at a West Coast port yourself, our door-to-port service includes nationwide pickup at your base address. Call us to discuss both options and which makes sense for your PCS orders.

Military PCS Car Shipping from Virginia to Hawaii is handled with inspection, secure transport to port, ocean freight shipment, and coordinated delivery for service members.

Car Shipping Hawaii · Honolulu, HI · 18 Years Industry Experience

Virginia — and the Hampton Roads area especially — is one of our most active PCS corridors. Naval Station Norfolk alone generates a significant volume of Hawaii-bound shipments every year. With 18 years coordinating thousands of Hawaii shipments, our team knows exactly how to time a Virginia pickup to hit the right sailing window. The overland leg from the East Coast requires more lead time than most people expect, and we build that into every booking.

"

PCS from Naval Station Norfolk to Pearl Harbor. I had a hard reporting date and our team was upfront about exactly how much lead time the Virginia-to-Hawaii shipment needed. The car was at Sand Island Terminal two days before I landed. That is the kind of coordination you need on a military move — nothing left to chance.

Petty Officer 2nd Class M. Chen — Norfolk, VA to Pearl Harbor-Hickam

Virginia Beach to Maui — our team was clear from the start that a neighbor island shipment from the East Coast takes 32 to 40 days. We planned around it and there were zero surprises.

Tom & Angela B. — Virginia Beach, VA to Kahului, Maui

Relocating from Richmond to Honolulu for work. I got quotes from four companies — only Car Shipping Hawaii explained the two-part cost structure honestly. One price, locked. No calls asking for more money before pickup.

Why Car Shipping Hawaii vs. Other Brokers

MMinnesota customers generally have a good carrier experience from the Twin Cities. The main risk is a flat statewide rate that ignores meaningful regional differences - Rochester's I-90 advantage, Duluth's additional southern leg, and northern Minnesota's limited access all produce different quotes. We price your specific location.

Feature Car Shipping Hawaii Typical Broker
All-inclusive pricing - quote form matches page price ✓ Deposit in the price, no surprises ✗ Quote form often shows higher number
Rochester I-90 direct advantage reflected ✓ I-90 direct access priced accurately ✗ Statewide MN flat rate
Northern MN / Iron Range access assessed before booking ✓ Remote access discussed upfront ✗ Booking taken, problem found later
Named single coordinator ✓ Camilo Jaime, direct and consistent ✗ Call center, different agent each time
Matson Route Specialist ✓ Hawaii route experts only ✗ General auto transport broker
Calendar coordination at booking ✓ Pickup timed to your sailing ✗ Generic window, you figure it out
Insurance explained at booking ✓ Both layers explained clearly ✗ Rarely discussed

Booking lead time

Book at least 2 to 3 weeks before your target pickup date. During peak summer months, 4 to 6 weeks is strongly recommended. Virginia shipments need careful lead time - the overland leg is 7 to 10 days, which leaves little room to recover if carrier scheduling slips. A deposit locks your vessel space and your rate.

  • How much does it cost to ship a car from Minnesota to Hawaii?

All prices are all-inclusive with the $600 deposit already reflected. Minneapolis and Twin Cities: $2,780 to $3,130, with $600 to $900 confirmed from Minneapolis. Rochester: $2,830 to $3,080. St. Paul and east metro: $2,830 to $3,180. St. Cloud and central MN: $2,880 to $3,180. Duluth and North Shore: $2,980 to $3,280. Northern MN and Iron Range: $3,080 to $3,480 or call for assessment. • Why does Rochester sometimes price differently than Minneapolis?

Rochester sits directly on I-90, the same interstate that runs all the way to Long Beach. Carriers heading west can load in Rochester without detouring to Minneapolis. At 1,820 to 1,870 miles - slightly shorter than Minneapolis - combined with direct I-90 access, Rochester has a modest competitive advantage for southeastern Minnesota customers.

  • Does Minnesota route through Long Beach or Oakland?

All Minnesota shipments route through Long Beach, CA. I-90 west from Minnesota connects through South Dakota, Wyoming, and Nevada to Los Angeles and Long Beach. Long Beach height clearance is 7 feet, width clearance 7 feet 2 inches.

  • I am with the Minnesota National Guard PCS'ing to Hawaii. How do I ship my car?

Camp Ripley near Little Falls and the MSP ANG Base at Fort Snelling in the Twin Cities are Minnesota's primary Guard installations with Hawaii PCS moves. Call us when orders arrive and we will coordinate the calendar around your reporting date from day one.

  • Do I need any documents to ship my car to Hawaii from Minnesota?

No documents are required at the port when shipping to Hawaii. Bring your government-issued photo ID and vehicle registration when picking up at the Hawaii terminal. Lienholder authorization is only required when shipping FROM Hawaii - not when shipping to Hawaii.

  • Do you ship electric vehicles from Minnesota to Hawaii?

No. We do not ship electric vehicles or plug-in hybrids on any route. Standard non-plug-in hybrids are accepted.

  • How far in advance should I book from Minnesota?

Minneapolis, St. Paul, and Rochester: 2 to 3 weeks minimum. St. Cloud and Duluth: 2 to 3 weeks. Northern MN and Iron Range: 3 to 4 weeks - call first. Peak summer months statewide: 4 to 6 weeks minimum.

  • Can I ship my car from Hawaii back to Minnesota?

Yes. We coordinate Port-to-Door shipping from all Hawaii terminals back to Minnesota. Ocean freight from Honolulu runs $900 to $1,200 with a 12 to 14 day transit, plus the mainland delivery leg. When shipping FROM Hawaii, title, current Hawaii registration, and Hawaii Safety Inspection Certificate are required. Same all-inclusive pricing, same dedicated coordinator.
