FAQ

About Tripler Army Medical Center: The Pacific's Premier Military Hospital

Known across Honolulu as "the big pink building on the hill," Tripler Army Medical Center is unlike any other military installation you may have been assigned to. Understanding what makes it unique matters for your PCS planning.

Tripler AMC is the only federal tertiary care hospital in the Pacific Basin.
Established in 1907 and rebuilt on Moanalua Ridge in 1948, TAMC serves approximately 435,000 beneficiaries across active duty personnel, retirees, families, and veterans from 40+ countries. Its distinctive coral-pink color is visible from virtually anywhere in the Honolulu district. The hospital serves as headquarters for Regional Health Command Pacific.

Tripler receives surgical and medical referrals from military installations across the entire Pacific, including Japan, Korea, Guam, and forward-deployed forces. This scope makes it one of the most professionally rewarding medical assignments in the Army, and one of the most requested. The hospital operates as a Level II Trauma Center verified by the American College of Surgeons, and handles over 2,100 outpatient encounters, 34 surgeries, 6 deliveries, and 142 emergency department visits every single day.

Sand Island Terminal is approximately 6 miles from Tripler.
Of all the Army installations on Oahu, Tripler is one of the closest to the Matson Sand Island pickup terminal. From the Tripler gate, take Moanalua Road / H-201 west toward the harbor. The drive is typically 10 to 15 minutes depending on time of day, making terminal pickup straightforward for medical personnel with demanding schedules.

Port Routing & Vehicle Size Clearances

Nearly all AMEDD installations route through Long Beach. The sole exception is Madigan AMC at JBLM and Northern California origins, which use Oakland.

Port Height Limit Width Limit Serves
Long Beach, CA 84 inches (7 ft) 86 inches (7 ft 2 in) All East Coast, Midwest, South, Mountain, and most West Coast AMEDD installations
Oakland, CA 76 inches (6 ft 4 in) 76 inches incl. mirrors Madigan AMC / JBLM, Bay Area, Sacramento, Portland, Seattle

Oakland's 76-inch limit is total vehicle height including accessories.
Roof racks, cargo carriers, and antennas all count toward that limit. Measure your vehicle's actual total height before booking. If you exceed Oakland's limit, your vehicle routes through Long Beach regardless of your origin.

Your vehicle arrives at: Honolulu Sand Island Terminal
Sand Island is the Matson terminal for all Oahu-bound vehicles. Tripler sits approximately 6 miles away, one of the shortest terminal-to-installation drives on Oahu. Bring your pickup appointment confirmation and government-issued photo ID.

Size limit policy:
If your vehicle exceeds port clearance limits, Car Shipping Hawaii cannot ship it. This is our company policy. No alternative oversize options are available through our service.

The Drive From Sand Island Terminal to Tripler AMC

Tripler has one of the most convenient terminal pickups of any Oahu installation. Here is the practical detail that will save you time.

Distance: ~6 miles |

Drive time: 10–15 minutes (traffic dependent)

Recommended route from Sand Island: Head north on Sand Island Access Road to Nimitz Highway (HI-92). Turn right (east) on Nimitz and follow it toward Honolulu. Merge onto Moanalua Road / H-201 east and follow signs to the Tripler gate on Jarrett White Road.

Traffic note: Tripler sits just off the H-1 / H-201 interchange, one of the busiest interchanges in Honolulu. Midday and evening hours can be congested. If possible, schedule your Sand Island pickup in the morning for the fastest drive back to Tripler.

Terminal pickup requires an appointment and photo ID.
You will receive notification when your vehicle clears agricultural inspection and is ready for pickup. Do not arrive at Sand Island without a confirmed appointment window. Have your government-issued photo ID ready at the gate. The terminal has a Visitor Control process that adds a few minutes, so plan accordingly.

Frequently Asked Questions: Car Shipping to Tripler AMC

  • What port do I use from Fort Sam Houston (Brooke AMC / JBSA)?

Fort Sam Houston routes through Long Beach, CA. Overland from San Antonio to Long Beach takes approximately 3 to 5 days. Total estimated door-to-delivery to Sand Island is 15 to 19 days. This is one of the faster timelines of any AMEDD installation because of the relatively short overland leg from Texas to the West Coast.

  • I matched to a Tripler residency in March. When should I book shipping?

Book as soon as you have your match results, even before orders are officially cut. GME start dates are July 1. That puts your PCS squarely in peak Hawaii shipping season. Matson sailings fill up and private carrier availability tightens significantly in June and July. A deposit locks your rate and a specific sailing window regardless of what happens to the market after you book. Booking in March gives you the widest selection of sailing dates and guaranteed pricing before summer surcharges kick in.

  • How far is Sand Island from Tripler and how do I get there?

Sand Island is approximately 6 miles from Tripler, making it one of the shortest terminal-to-installation drives on Oahu. From the Tripler gate, take Moanalua Road / H-201 west toward the harbor, then follow Sand Island Access Road signs. The drive is typically 10 to 15 minutes. Schedule your pickup in the morning to avoid the H-1 / H-201 interchange congestion that builds through midday.

  • What JPPSO handles vehicle shipping for Tripler personnel?

Tripler personnel use the Fort Shafter JPPSO for government-channel vehicle shipments:

Joint Personal Property Shipping Office (JPPSO)

Building 2652, 4825 Bougainville Drive, Fort Shafter, HI 96818

    Phone: (808) 473-7750

Hours: Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, Friday 0800–1600

For private-sector shipping, second vehicles, or guaranteed-pricing service, contact Car Shipping Hawaii directly.

  • Can I ship as a Navy or Air Force medical officer assigned to Tripler?

Yes. Tripler provides care for all branches and some non-Army medical personnel serve at TAMC on assignment. Car Shipping Hawaii works with any branch of service. Your departure port and timeline will depend on your origin installation, not your branch. Call us with your orders and we will work out the routing.

  • What neighborhoods do Tripler personnel typically live in?

Tripler is on Moanalua Ridge in Honolulu. On-base housing is available and managed by Island Palm Communities (also at Fort Shafter, Schofield, and Aliamanu Military Reservation). Off-base, Salt Lake and Moanalua are the closest neighborhoods. Many physicians live in Kailua and Kaneohe, a quick drive over the H-3. Ewa Beach, Kapolei, and Mililani offer newer construction at more moderate prices. Having your own vehicle matters significantly for daily commuting from these areas.

  • When should I book if PCSing to Tripler in summer?

Book 4 to 6 weeks before your target pickup date for any summer PCS. For July-start GME residents, we recommend booking in March or April at the latest. The later you wait, the fewer sailing options you have and the higher the market pressure on pricing. A deposit locks both your rate and your sailing window immediately.
