Ship Your Car from the Mainland to Hawaii Door-to-Port Services are provided with vehicle pickup, truck transport, and secure cargo ship delivery.
Step by Step

How Door-to-Port Car Shipping to Hawaii Works

Every shipment follows a four-step logistics chain. We coordinate every stage and keep you updated at each transition so there are no surprises.

Pickup at your address

We dispatch a licensed, insured carrier to your home or business. A condition inspection and Bill of Lading are completed at pickup. Insurance is active from the moment we take the vehicle.

Overland transport to port

Your vehicle is transported to Long Beach, CA or Oakland, CA depending on your location. We coordinate port delivery to align with your sailing window and minimize port storage time.

Ocean transit to Hawaii

Your vehicle is loaded aboard a Matson vessel inside the hull. Weekly sailings depart to all four Hawaii islands. Ocean transit to Honolulu takes approximately 12 to 14 days.

Pick up at the Hawaii port

You receive an arrival notification when your vehicle is ready for release. Bring your government-issued photo ID to the terminal gate. A final inspection is completed at release.

Port Assignment

Departure Ports & Hawaii Terminals

Port assignment depends on where we pick up your vehicle. We use two active departure ports. We do not use Tacoma - Matson terminated that route.

Transparent Pricing

Hawaii Car Shipping Cost

We publish real rates. What we quote is what you pay - no post-booking surprises, no mystery fees when you're already on a plane.

Last updated March 2026 - rates subject to peak season surcharges June–August.

Part 1 - Varies by Location

Overland Pickup

We pick up at your address and transport to the West Coast port. Cost depends on distance from Long Beach or Oakland.

💬

When you call or submit the quote form, we provide one All-Inclusive Price for the full door-to-port journey. No surprises, no second invoice when the carrier shows up.

Part 2 - Fixed by Route

Ocean Freight

Fixed by destination island. Same whether you ship from California or New York. Covers vessel, port handling, and documentation.

Overland Pickup - Typical Ranges

Carrier market rates by region. Call for your exact number.

ORIGIN CITIES COST
Southern CA LA, San Diego $280–$450
No. CA / PNW SF, Portland, Seattle $350–$550
Southwest Phoenix, Vegas, Denver $450–$750
South Central Dallas, Houston $600–$950
Midwest Chicago, Minneapolis $700–$1,050
Southeast Atlanta, Charlotte $800–$1,200
East Coast NYC, Miami, DC $900–$1,400

About the $600 deposit: Applied toward your total - not added on top. It secures your vessel space and locks your quoted rate. The deposit is non-refundable once your booking is confirmed, because Matson allocates that vessel space at the time of booking and it cannot be released once reserved. If your plans change, call us as early as possible - we will do our best to move your booking to a later sailing based on availability.

Peak season: June – August. Surcharges apply during summer months. Book early. A deposit locks your quoted rate regardless of what the market does after you book.

East Coast: 7–14 days. Texas / Midwest: 3–7 days. West Coast: 1–3 days.

Ocean transit

To Oahu: approximately 12–14 days. To Maui, Big Island, or Kauai: approximately 22–24 days. Track your vehicle online during this leg.

Real-time tracking available

East Coast to Oahu (total)

~21–28 days

West Coast to Oahu (total)

Booking lead time: Standard moves - at least 2 to 3 weeks before your target pickup date. Peak season (May through August) - 4 to 6 weeks minimum.

New York / New Jersey / Boston Long Beach 25–32 days East Coast

All transit times include overland pickup, transport to the West Coast port, and 12 to 14 days of ocean transit to Oahu. Maui, Big Island, and Kauai add 13 to 16 days of ocean transit. Estimates can vary by season, carrier availability, and routing. View current Matson sailing schedules.

💬

Missing the port cutoff has real consequences. If your vehicle does not arrive at the terminal in time for its scheduled sailing, it waits for the next available departure - often 2 or more weeks. That means unexpected car rental costs, extended hotel stays, and expenses most people never factor in. We coordinate your pickup window specifically to hit the right sailing window for your target move date.

Coverage

Insurance: Two Layers You Need to Know About

Most brokers never explain this. We walk through both layers at booking so you know exactly what covers your vehicle from the moment we pick it up.

Layer 1 - Overland Transport

Land Carrier

$100,000

The mainland carrier carries up to $100,000 in cargo insurance. This covers your vehicle from the moment it is picked up at your address through delivery at the West Coast port - the entire overland portion.

Layer 2 - Ocean Transport

Matson Vessel

Up to $8,000

Matson's carrier liability covers actual damage sustained during the ocean crossing, up to approximately $8,000 for an average-sized vehicle. You can declare a higher vehicle value on the Dock Receipt and pay an additional freight rate to increase this limit to the full value of your vehicle.

💡

We always recommend verifying with your personal auto insurance carrier whether your policy covers ocean transport. Photograph your vehicle thoroughly before pickup and again at the Hawaii terminal - this documentation protects you in any claim.

Peace of Mind

Tracking Your Car Every Step of the Way

You should always know where your vehicle is. Here is how tracking works at each phase.

Overland Phase

Land Carrier Tracking

From the moment our carrier picks up your vehicle, a Bill of Lading documents its condition and location. Your assigned carrier provides direct contact and updates during overland transport. We remain your single point of contact - if you need a status update at any point, call us.

Ocean Phase

Matson Vessel Tracking

Once your vehicle is loaded at the West Coast port, you can track its vessel in real time using Matson's vessel tracker. You will see the ship's position, estimated arrival port, and ETA. We notify you as soon as the vehicle is confirmed on board..

💡

We proactively update you at three key moments: when your vehicle is picked up, when it is confirmed loaded on the vessel, and when it arrives at the Hawaii port. You are never left guessing where your car is.

Camilo Jaime - Lead Shipping Coordinator

Car Shipping Hawaii · Honolulu, HI · 18 Years Industry Experience

With 18 years in the vehicle shipping industry and thousands of Hawaii shipments coordinated, our team knows every port, every route, and every mile of your journey. We work with every customer personally from booking to delivery - you are never handed off to a dispatcher after you book. We go through the calendar with you, coordinate pickup timing to your exact sailing window, and stay reachable throughout the entire move.

  • How much does door-to-port car shipping to Hawaii cost?

Your total has two parts. The first is overland pickup and transport to the West Coast port, which varies by location - typically $280 to $450 from Southern California, $600 to $950 from Texas, and $900 to $1,400 from the East Coast. The second is ocean freight: $1,580 to Oahu or $2,400 to Maui, Big Island, or Kauai. We provide both numbers together as one All-Inclusive Price when you call or submit the quote form.

  • Do I need to drive my car to California?

No. Door-to-port includes nationwide pickup at your address. We dispatch a licensed, insured carrier to wherever you are in the continental US. You do not need to arrange any trucking or drive to a port yourself.

  • Which port does my car ship from?

Most states route through Long Beach, CA - including all Southern California, Las Vegas, Phoenix, Denver, all Midwest states, all Southern states, and all East Coast states. Northern California, Oregon, and Washington state route through Oakland, CA. We do not use Tacoma.

  • How long does door-to-port shipping to Hawaii take?

Total time from pickup to Hawaii port release ranges from 16 to 32 days depending on your pickup location. California pickups typically take 16 to 20 days. East Coast pickups take 25 to 32 days. This includes overland pickup and transport to the port, plus 12 to 14 days of ocean transit to Oahu. Neighbor island destinations add ocean transit days. See the full transit table above for your state.

  • Is the deposit refundable?

The $600 deposit is non-refundable once your booking is confirmed. Matson allocates vessel space at the time of booking, and that space cannot be released once reserved. If your plans change, call us as early as possible - we will do our best to move your booking to a later sailing based on availability, though rescheduling is subject to vessel space and is not guaranteed.

  • Can I put personal items in my car when shipping to Hawaii?

No. Personal belongings are not permitted inside the vehicle. Hawaii agricultural inspection and DOT regulations prohibit household goods. The vehicle must remain empty except for factory-installed components. This is enforced at the mainland port terminal before loading.

  • Is my car insured during transport?

Yes, through two layers. During the overland portion, the mainland carrier carries up to $100,000 in cargo insurance from pickup through port delivery. During the ocean crossing, Matson's carrier liability covers actual damage up to approximately $8,000 for an average vehicle. You can declare a higher value on the Dock Receipt to increase this limit. We always recommend verifying with your personal auto insurer whether your policy covers ocean transport.

  • Can I ship an electric vehicle or plug-in hybrid to Hawaii?

No. Electric vehicles and plug-in hybrids are not accepted on any route we coordinate. This is firm policy with no exceptions and no alternatives through our service.

  • How far in advance should I book?

At least 2 to 3 weeks before your target pickup date. During peak season (May through August), book 4 to 6 weeks in advance. Missing the port cutoff means waiting for the next available sailing - often 2 or more weeks. We coordinate your pickup window to hit the right sailing for your move date.

  • What are the vehicle requirements for shipping to Hawaii?

The vehicle must be fully operational - steering, braking, and rolling 100%. Fuel must not exceed one quarter tank. The vehicle must be empty of all personal items and clean inside and out for Hawaii USDA biosecurity inspection. No windshield chips or cracks. Electric vehicles, plug-in hybrids, and non-running vehicles are not accepted.
