About Fort Shafter: What Matters for Your PCS Vehicle Shipment

Fort Shafter is unlike any other Hawaii installation. It is a senior headquarters post, not a combat unit base. That changes who is PCSing here, where they are coming from, and what the vehicle shipping timeline looks like.

The closest Hawaii installation to the Sand Island pickup terminal.
Your vehicle arrives at the Matson Sand Island Terminal in Honolulu, approximately 5 miles from Fort Shafter's main gate. This is the shortest terminal-to-installation drive of any base on Oahu. From the gate, take Moanalua Freeway west or surface streets through Mapunapuna. Typically 10 to 20 minutes, traffic depending.

Established in 1907, Fort Shafter is the oldest Army installation on Oahu and a National Historic Landmark. The iconic Palm Circle historic district anchors the post. Today it serves as USARPAC headquarters, commanding Army forces across 36 countries in the Indo-Pacific region. The post hosts approximately 8,000 active duty personnel and 12,000 family members. Unlike combat unit bases, most soldiers stationed here are senior NCOs, officers, and staff with complex PCS timelines, often coming from other OCONUS assignments.

A car is not optional at Fort Shafter.
The post is close to downtown Honolulu but not walkable to most daily needs. Commissary and major PX facilities are at Schofield Barracks, about 25 miles away. Tripler Army Medical Center is adjacent to Fort Shafter. Most families need at least one vehicle, many need two.

Many Fort Shafter assignments are OCONUS follow-on tours.
A significant number of soldiers reporting to USARPAC come directly from Korea (Camp Humphreys), Japan (Camp Zama, Yokota), or Europe (Wiesbaden, Grafenwoehr). If your vehicle is currently OCONUS, the section below covers your specific shipping path.

PCSing From OCONUS to Fort Shafter: Your Vehicle Pipeline

This is the section most guides skip entirely. If you are coming to Fort Shafter from Korea, Japan, Germany, or another OCONUS post, your vehicle shipment follows a different path than a standard CONUS-to-Hawaii move. Here is how it actually works.

Your vehicle ships separately from you.
When PCSing OCONUS to Hawaii, you typically fly directly to Honolulu while your vehicle is routed through a CONUS Vehicle Processing Center (VPC) before being shipped onward to Hawaii. The two journeys rarely align perfectly. Plan for a gap between your arrival and your vehicle's arrival.

Common OCONUS-to-Fort Shafter Vehicle Routes

Previous OCONUS Post Government Vehicle Route Private Shipping Option Additional Notes
Camp Humphreys / Osan / Daegu (Korea) VPC Korea → West Coast VPC → Hawaii Ship after CONUS arrival Vehicle enters CONUS at West Coast port. Coordinate Hawaii shipping from there.
Camp Zama / Yokota / Sagamihara (Japan) VPC Japan → West Coast VPC → Hawaii Ship after CONUS arrival Similar pipeline to Korea. West Coast VPC typically Seattle or San Diego area.
Wiesbaden / Grafenwoehr / Stuttgart (Germany) VPC Germany → East Coast VPC → CONUS Ship from East Coast Vehicle arrives East Coast. We arrange pickup and ship through Long Beach to Honolulu.
JBER / Fort Wainwright (Alaska) Direct CONUS routing Ready to ship Alaska is OCONUS but has direct land routes. Coordinate West Coast port pickup.

The gap is real. Plan for it.
Between your OCONUS departure, CONUS VPC processing, and Hawaii ocean transit, your vehicle could arrive 4 to 8 weeks after you land at Daniel K. Inouye Airport. Budget for a rental car at Fort Shafter during that window. Do not assume your vehicle will be at Sand Island when you check in.

Call us before you leave your OCONUS post.
The earlier we know your timeline, the better we can coordinate pickup from your CONUS vehicle processing location and get it on the right Matson sailing. Second vehicles, vehicles that need private shipping for any reason, and families who want guaranteed pricing and personal coordination start here.

Missing a Matson sailing cutoff means waiting 2+ weeks for the next one.
For senior officers and NCOs with tight in-processing schedules at USARPAC, an unexpected 2-week vehicle delay has real consequences, including rental car costs and added stress during an already complex PCS. We coordinate pickup timing specifically around the sailing schedule to prevent this.

Booking lead time:
Standard: 2–3 weeks before target pickup. Summer PCS season (May–August): 4–6 weeks minimum. Senior leaders with complex OCONUS transition timelines should contact us as early as possible, ideally as soon as orders are cut.

Calendar Coordination Around Your USARPAC In-Processing Date

Camilo maps your pickup date against the Matson sailing schedule and your target Fort Shafter check-in date. For OCONUS returnees we factor in CONUS VPC processing time. The goal is your vehicle at Sand Island before or shortly after you sign in at USARPAC.

Vehicle Pickup and Port Processing

A licensed carrier picks up your vehicle at your designated origin location and transports it to Long Beach or Oakland. We coordinate all documentation. At the port, your vehicle is inspected, processed, and loaded onto a Matson vessel bound for Honolulu.

Sand Island Pickup — 5 Miles From the Gate

Your vehicle arrives at the Sand Island Terminal in Honolulu, clears USDA agricultural inspection, and is ready for pickup. We notify you when it is cleared. The drive from Fort Shafter to Sand Island is about 10 to 20 minutes, making this the most convenient terminal-to-base pickup on Oahu.

Port Routing & Vehicle Size Limits

Almost all Fort Shafter-bound vehicles route through Long Beach. The exception is Pacific Northwest and Northern California origins. Know your vehicle's clearance before booking.

Port Height Limit Width Limit Serves
Long Beach, CA 84 inches (7 ft) 86 inches (7 ft 2 in) All East Coast, Midwest, South, Mountain, Southwest, and most West Coast origins
Oakland, CA 76 inches (6 ft 4 in) 76 inches incl. mirrors SF Bay Area, Sacramento, Northern CA, Portland, Seattle, JBLM

Oakland's 76-inch limit applies to total vehicle height, including any additions.
Army soldiers commonly drive lifted trucks. Measure your total vehicle height including lift kits, roof racks, antennas, or cargo carriers before booking. If you exceed Oakland's limit, your vehicle routes through Long Beach instead.

Your vehicle arrives at: Honolulu Sand Island Terminal
Sand Island is Matson's primary Honolulu terminal. It sits approximately 5 miles from Fort Shafter's main gate, the shortest drive of any Oahu installation to the terminal. Bring your pickup confirmation and government-issued photo ID.

Size limit policy:
If your vehicle exceeds the clearance limits at its assigned port, Car Shipping Hawaii cannot ship it. This is our policy, not industry-wide. No alternative oversize options are available through our service.

Insurance: Both Layers Explained

Your vehicle passes through two distinct carriers. Each carries different coverage. We explain both at booking so there are no questions later.

Layer 1 — Overland

Pickup to mainland port

Up to $100,000

The land carrier holds up to $100,000 in cargo insurance. Covers your vehicle from pickup at your origin installation until arrival at the mainland port. Exceeds replacement value for most soldier-owned vehicles.

Layer 2 — Ocean (Matson)

Port to Sand Island, Honolulu

~$8,000 standard

Matson's carrier liability covers actual damage up to approximately $8,000 for an average-sized vehicle. Declare a higher value on the Dock Receipt and pay an additional freight rate to increase liability to the vehicle's full value. Verify whether your personal auto insurance extends to ocean transport.

Frequently Asked Questions: Fort Shafter Car Shipping

  • What port do I use to ship my car to Fort Shafter from the East Coast?

All East Coast Army installations, including Fort Liberty (Bragg), Fort Drum, Fort Stewart, Fort Belvoir, and the Pentagon area, route through Long Beach, CA. Overland transport from the East Coast typically takes 7 to 12 days, making total door-to-delivery to Sand Island approximately 19 to 26 days. Book 3 to 4 weeks before your target pickup date at minimum.

  • I am PCSing from Korea or Japan to Fort Shafter. How do I ship my car?

JBLM in Washington state routes through Oakland, CA. Oakland's clearance limit is 76 inches in both height and width, including mirrors and roof accessories. If your vehicle exceeds that, it routes through Long Beach instead. From JBLM to Honolulu, estimate 2 to 3 days overland plus 12 to 14 days ocean transit, for a total of approximately 14 to 17 days door-to-delivery.

  • I am PCSing from Korea or Japan to Fort Shafter. How do I ship my car?

Your vehicle will typically be shipped from your OCONUS post through an official VPC to a CONUS Vehicle Processing Center first. Once your vehicle arrives stateside, we arrange pickup from the VPC location and ship it through Long Beach to Honolulu. Contact us as soon as you have orders so we can plan the full timeline. The key is knowing when your vehicle will be at the CONUS VPC so we can align it with the right Matson sailing.

  • How far is the Sand Island Terminal from Fort Shafter?

Approximately 5 miles, making Fort Shafter the closest Oahu installation to the Sand Island pickup terminal. From the Shafter gate, take the H-1 or H-201 west and follow signs toward Sand Island Access Road. The drive is typically 10 to 20 minutes depending on time of day. Bring your pickup confirmation and government-issued photo ID.

  • What is the JPPSO contact for government vehicle shipping at Fort Shafter?

The Joint Personal Property Shipping Office (JPPSO) for Fort Shafter is located at:

Building 2652, 4825 Bougainville Drive, Fort Shafter, HI 96818

    Phone: (808) 473-7750

Hours: Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday 0800 to 1600

The JPPSO handles government-channel shipments. For private-sector shipping, second vehicles, or guaranteed-pricing service, contact Car Shipping Hawaii.

  • Do I need lien holder authorization to ship my car to Fort Shafter?

No. Lien holder authorization is NOT required when shipping TO Hawaii. It is only required when shipping FROM Hawaii at the end of your tour. This is a common point of confusion for soldiers on their first Hawaii assignment.

  • Can I ship a lifted truck or truck with aftermarket accessories to Fort Shafter?

Possibly, depending on your total vehicle height after modifications. Long Beach accepts vehicles up to 84 inches tall and 86 inches wide. If your truck has a lift kit, roof rack, or other additions, measure the actual total height before booking. If you are within the Long Beach limit, we can ship it. Vehicles exceeding both port limits cannot be shipped through our service.

  • When should I book for a summer PCS to Fort Shafter?

Army PCS season peaks June and July. Matson sailings and land carrier availability both tighten. Book 4 to 6 weeks before your target pickup if you are moving between May and August. A deposit locks your rate regardless of market movement after booking. Senior leaders with OCONUS transition complexity should book even earlier.
