How Arizona a to Hawaii Car Shipping Works

There is no direct sailing from Arizona to Hawaii. Your vehicle travels in two legs: an overland haul from your Arizona address to the Matson departure port at Long Beach, CA, followed by ocean transit to your Hawaii destination. We coordinate both legs as a single managed shipment with one All-Inclusive price.

Arizona's position makes this the most time-efficient overland corridor outside California. The I-10 freeway runs directly from Phoenix to Los Angeles with no mountain passes, no dangerous high-altitude sections, and strong carrier availability year-round. For most Arizona customers, the overland leg is done before customers in other states have even been assigned a carrier.

Call (808) 378-7540 or fill out the online form. We give you a All-Inclusive price covering overland pickup from your Arizona address and Matson ocean freight - one number, locked at booking

We coordinate your pickup to the sailing schedule

We go through the calendar with you personally - your move-out date, flight, and housing timeline - and time the carrier pickup so your car arrives at Long Beach in the right window for the next available Matson sailing. Arizona's short overland leg gives us more precision than almost any other state.

Carrier picks up at your Arizona address

A licensed carrier collects the vehicle from your door and transports it to Long Beach via I-10. From Phoenix, this takes approximately 2 to 3 business days. From Tucson, 2 to 4 days. From Yuma, as few as 1 to 2 days.

Matson sails to Hawaii - you pick up at the terminal

Your vehicle loads onto the Matson vessel at Long Beach and sails to your Hawaii island. Ocean transit to Honolulu takes approximately 12 to 14 days. We notify you when your vehicle reaches Grounded/Available status and walk you through terminal pickup.

Arizona Pickup Locations & Port Routing

We dispatch licensed carriers to any Arizona address, residential or commercial. All Arizona shipments route through Long Beach, CA - I-10 is the direct corridor and one of the highest-volume auto transport lanes in the United States, which keeps carrier availability consistently strong from the Phoenix metro year-round.

Cars are ready to ship from Arizona to Hawaii after inspection, documentation, and secure loading for transport to port and ocean shipment service.

All Arizona shipments depart from Long Beach, CA (Matson Terminal). Height clearance: 7 feet. Width clearance: 7 feet 2 inches. If your vehicle exceeds these dimensions, call us before booking. Vehicles over the limit cannot be accepted at this terminal.

Why arizona has strong carrier availability

The Phoenix metro is a major snowbird and relocation hub. Hundreds of vehicles move between Arizona and Southern California every week, which means carriers on the I-10 corridor are plentiful and competitive. This works in your favor on both price and pickup speed.

The overland leg from Phoenix to Long Beach is roughly 370 miles on a high-volume carrier corridor - significantly shorter and cheaper than any East Coast or Midwest state. The ocean freight portion is identical regardless of origin state, so Arizona customers benefit directly from the low overland cost.

Pricing

Starting Rates by Destination Island

Arizona Pricing Advantage: Arizona door-to-port rates to Oahu are typically $400 to $800 lower than a comparable shipment from an East Coast state, and $200 to $400 lower than most Midwest states. The I-10 corridor from Phoenix to Long Beach is one of the most competitive auto transport lanes in the country - high carrier volume keeps rates down.

About Deposits. A deposit is standard across all Hawaii auto transport. It secures your vessel space and locks your quoted rate. For Door-to-Port, the deposit is $600. For Port-to-Port, it is $200. The deposit is applied toward your total - not added on top. What we quote is what you pay, guaranteed.

Peak Season Pricing: Peak season surcharges apply during summer months (June through August) when demand is highest and vessels fill up fast. Book early and lock your rate - a deposit guarantees your quoted price regardless of what the market does after you book..

Door-to-Port vs. Port-to-Port from Arizona

There are two ways to handle the mainland side of your Alabama to Hawaii shipment. Most Alabama customers use door-to-port because Long Beach is 1,950 to 2,200 miles away - a distance very few people want to drive.

The Arizona port-to-port option. Unlike East Coast customers for whom driving to Long Beach is impractical, Arizona customers - especially those in Phoenix - sometimes combine the port drop-off with a trip to Southern California before flying to Hawaii. If that describes your situation, port-to-port saves you the overland fee and only costs $1,580 to Oahu. Call us and we will walk you through the Long Beach drop-off process.

Transit Times

Transit Times & the Matson Sailing Schedule

Arizona-to-Hawaii is the fastest mainland-to-Hawaii shipment we coordinate. The overland leg on I-10 from Phoenix to Long Beach is 2 to 3 business days - no mountain passes, no high-altitude delays, no weather risk in the corridor. Combined with the ocean crossing, most Phoenix customers see their car in Honolulu in 15 to 19 days from pickup.

The most common mistake Arizona customers make is assuming the short timeline removes the need for lead time. Even with a 2 to 3 day overland leg, Matson sailings are weekly and a missed cutoff adds a full week. We coordinate every Arizona pickup to the specific sailing window so that does not happen.

Booking lead time: Book at least 2 to 3 weeks before your target pickup date. Arizona's short overland leg is an advantage, but carrier scheduling and Matson cutoffs still require lead time. During peak summer months - when Arizona heat drives a surge in Hawaii-bound moves - 4 to 6 weeks is strongly recommended to secure your sailing slot.

How to Prepare Your Car Before Pickup

Getting your vehicle ready before the carrier arrives prevents delays at the port. These requirements are enforced at Long Beach terminal intake and at Hawaii's agricultural biosecurity inspection - run by the Hawaii Department of Agriculture. No documents are required at the port when shipping to Hawaii.

Required: Shipping TO Hawaii

Fuel at or below a quarter tank. Required fire safety regulation at all maritime terminals.

Remove all personal items from the interior. No luggage, household goods, or belongings permitted. Enforced at intake and Hawaii agricultural inspection.

Disable the alarm system before pickup. Active alarms cause intake delays at the port.

Exterior and interior cleaned thoroughly. No mud, dirt, seeds, or debris. Arkansas vehicles from rural or agricultural areas should be particularly thorough with wheel wells and undercarriage cleaning - the Hawaii USDA biosecurity inspection checks for soil and organic material that could introduce pests.

Vehicle fully operational. Steering, braking, and rolling must be 100% functional.

No windshield chips or cracks.

Government-issued photo ID and vehicle registration ready for Hawaii terminal pickup.

Not Accepted - No Exceptions

Electric vehicles and plug-in hybrids are not accepted. We do not ship EVs or plug-in hybrids on any route.

Non-running vehicles are not accepted. The vehicle must be fully operational at pickup.

No documents needed to ship TO Hawaii

No title, registration, or authorization paperwork is required at the port when shipping a vehicle to Hawaii. Documents are only required when shipping FROM Hawaii back to the mainland. Bring your government-issued photo ID and registration when picking up at the Hawaii terminal.

Arizona Heat Note

If your vehicle has been sitting in direct Arizona sun, check that the interior is not retaining excessive heat at pickup time and that no personal items have been left behind accidentally. Carriers will note the vehicle condition at pickup - a thorough pre-pickup walk-around protects you in any claim.

Photograph your vehicle thoroughly before the carrier arrives - all four sides, the roof, and the interior. This documentation protects you in any claim situation.

Insurance Coverage

How Insurance Works on Arizona to Hawaii Shipments

Most brokers never explain this. The overland and ocean portions of your shipment are covered by two different types of protection, and understanding both before you book matters.

Layer 1 - Overland Transport

Overland Transport (Arizona to Long Beach)

$100,000

The land carrier transporting your vehicle to the port carries up to $100,000 in cargo insurance. This covers your vehicle for the entire 2,500 to 2,750 mile cross-country portion of the journey from your Arkansas address to Long Beach.

💡

Our recommendation: Verify with your personal auto insurance carrier whether your policy covers ocean transport. Photograph your vehicle thoroughly before the carrier arrives in Arizona and again at pickup in Hawaii. This documentation protects you in any claim situation.

Layer 2 - Ocean Transport

Ocean Transport (Matson Vessel)

$8,000

Matson's carrier liability is limited to the actual damage sustained, up to approximately $8,000 for an average-sized vehicle. You can declare a higher vehicle value on the Dock Receipt and pay an additional freight rate to increase this limit up to the full value of your vehicle.

PCS Moves

Military PCS Moves from Arizona to Hawaii

Arkansas has a smaller military footprint than many Southern states, but Little Rock Air Force Base in Jacksonville is an active C-130 airlift wing and generates steady PCS volume to Hawaii commands. Pine Bluff Arsenal and Camp Joseph T. Robinson (Robinson Maneuver Training Center) also produce periodic military moves. For all Arkansas military customers, the same principle applies: book early, and we will work through the calendar personally so your pickup aligns with the right sailing and your Hawaii reporting date.

🎖️ Military discounts may apply depending on route and availability. If you cannot drop off at a West Coast port yourself, our door-to-port service includes nationwide pickup at your base address. Call us to discuss both options and which makes sense for your PCS orders.

Real Reviews from Real Virginia Customers

Virginia — and the Hampton Roads area especially — is one of our most active PCS corridors. Naval Station Norfolk alone generates a significant volume of Hawaii-bound shipments every year. With 18 years coordinating thousands of Hawaii shipments, our team knows exactly how to time a Virginia pickup to hit the right sailing window. The overland leg from the East Coast requires more lead time than most people expect, and we build that into every booking.

"

PCS from Naval Station Norfolk to Pearl Harbor. I had a hard reporting date and our team was upfront about exactly how much lead time the Virginia-to-Hawaii shipment needed. The car was at Sand Island Terminal two days before I landed. That is the kind of coordination you need on a military move — nothing left to chance.

Petty Officer 2nd Class M. Chen — Norfolk, VA to Pearl Harbor-Hickam

Virginia Beach to Maui — our team was clear from the start that a neighbor island shipment from the East Coast takes 32 to 40 days. We planned around it and there were zero surprises.

Tom & Angela B. — Virginia Beach, VA to Kahului, Maui

Relocating from Richmond to Honolulu for work. I got quotes from four companies — only Car Shipping Hawaii explained the two-part cost structure honestly. One price, locked. No calls asking for more money before pickup.

Why Car Shipping Hawaii vs. Other Brokers

Most companies quoting Arizona-to-Hawaii car shipping treat the overland leg as a commodity and focus only on the ocean freight. The reality is that timing the I-10 run from Phoenix to Long Beach to hit the right Matson sailing window is the detail that determines whether your car arrives on schedule. Before booking anyone, ask for All-Inclusive pricing in writing. Most Arizona customers who switch to us have the same story: they were quoted one price and asked for more money before pickup or at the port.

Feature Car Shipping Hawaii Typical Broker
All-Inclusive pricing, no post-booking changes ✓ Locked at booking ✗ Last-minute surcharges common
Named single coordinator ✓ Direct, consistent contact ✗ Call center, different agent each time
Matson exclusive specialist ✓ Hawaii route experts ✗ General auto transport broker
Calendar coordination at booking ✓ Pickup timed to your sailing ✗ Generic window, you figure it out
Overland + ocean managed together ✓ One shipment, one contact ✗ Two vendors, two contacts
Insurance explained at booking ✓ Both layers explained clearly ✗ Rarely discussed
Military PCS experience ✓ Hundreds of PCS moves Varies widely

Booking lead time

Book at least 2 to 3 weeks before your target pickup date. During peak summer months, 4 to 6 weeks is strongly recommended. Virginia shipments need careful lead time — the overland leg is 7 to 10 days, which leaves little room to recover if carrier scheduling slips. A deposit locks your vessel space and your rate.

  • How much does it cost to ship a car from Arizona to Hawaii?

Total door-to-port cost from Arizona to Oahu (Honolulu) typically runs $1,880 to $2,180 for most vehicles from the Phoenix area. This includes overland transport from Arizona to Long Beach plus ocean freight. Tucson and Flagstaff customers typically run slightly higher due to the longer overland distance. Neighbor island destinations - Maui, Big Island, Kauai - typically run $2,600 to $3,000 or more. Port-to-Port (you drive to Long Beach) starts at $1,580 to Oahu and $2,400 to neighbor islands. The $600 deposit is applied toward your total, not added on top.

  • How long does it take to ship a car from Arizona to Hawaii?

Total door-to-port time from Phoenix to Honolulu is typically 15 to 19 days - among the shortest of any continental US state. This includes 2 to 3 business days overland to Long Beach, 1 to 2 days port processing, and approximately 12 to 14 days ocean transit. Tucson adds 1 to 2 more overland days. Neighbor islands add approximately 13 to 16 more days of ocean transit, putting the total at 27 to 35 days from pickup.

  • Does my car ship directly from Arizona to Hawaii?

No. There is no direct Matson sailing from Arizona. Your vehicle is transported overland to Long Beach, CA - approximately 370 miles from Phoenix on I-10 - where Matson Hawaii-bound vessels depart. We manage the entire overland leg as part of your shipment.

  • Is it worth driving my car to Long Beach and using Port-to-Port?

For Arizona customers, port-to-port is one of the more practical options of any state. Long Beach is approximately 5 to 6 hours from Phoenix on I-10. If you are already traveling to Southern California, flying from LAX, or combining the drop-off with a road trip, port-to-port at $1,580 to Oahu saves you the overland fee. Call us to discuss your situation and we will tell you honestly which option makes more sense.

  • Do I need any documents to ship my car to Hawaii from Arizona?

No documents are required at the port when shipping a vehicle to Hawaii. Bring your government-issued photo ID and vehicle registration when picking up at the Hawaii terminal. Lienholder authorization is only required when shipping FROM Hawaii back to the mainland - not when shipping to Hawaii.

  • I am PCSing from Luke AFB or Davis-Monthan - what do I need to know?

Luke AFB in Glendale and Davis-Monthan in Tucson are two of our most active Arizona PCS corridors. Book as early as possible once you have your orders. The overland leg from Luke is 2 to 3 days to Long Beach, and from Davis-Monthan 2 to 4 days. We coordinate the pickup date to your reporting date at your Hawaii command - Pearl Harbor-Hickam, Schofield, Wheeler, or wherever you are headed. We go through the calendar with you personally so timing is precise.

  • How far in advance should I book from Arizona?

At least 2 to 3 weeks before your target pickup date. Arizona's short overland leg is a real advantage, but Matson sailings are weekly and missing a cutoff adds a full week regardless. During peak summer months - when Arizona heat sends a wave of residents to Hawaii - 4 to 6 weeks is strongly recommended.

  • Do you ship electric vehicles from Arizona to Hawaii?

No. We do not ship electric vehicles or plug-in hybrids on any route, including Arizona to Hawaii. Standard non-plug-in hybrids are accepted.

  • Can I ship my car from Hawaii back to Arizona?

Yes. We coordinate Port-to-Door shipping from all Hawaii terminals back to Arizona. Ocean freight from Honolulu runs $900 to $1,200 with a 12 to 14 day transit, plus the mainland delivery leg to your Arizona address. When shipping FROM Hawaii, documents are required including your title, current Hawaii registration, and Hawaii Safety Inspection Certificate. Same All-Inclusive pricing, same dedicated coordinator.
