Drop-Off Day Does Not Have to Be Stressful
Most first-time shippers show up to drop-off unsure of what to bring or what happens next. The process is actually simple once you know the sequence: check in, walk the vehicle with our team or the terminal staff, sign the paperwork, hand over one key, and get your tracking confirmation. Here is exactly what to expect so drop-off day is a non-event instead of a source of stress.
What to Bring
You need two things: a photo ID and your Matson booking number. That is it. No title, no registration, nothing to print or email ahead of time. If you are dropping off at a terminal yourself for port-to-port service, bring only one set of keys. USDA inspectors need access to every locked compartment, including the trunk and the glove box, and a missing key can hold up your vehicle at the gate.
The Inspection Walkaround
Before your vehicle is accepted, someone walks the exterior with you and notes the existing condition on a Vehicle Inspection Report or Dock Receipt. This is the same document that protects you if anything needs to be addressed on the other end. Take your own photos during this walkaround, all four sides, the roofline, and the wheels. It takes two minutes and it is the single best thing you can do to protect yourself.
Fuel, Cleanliness, and What Gets Checked
Fuel must be at a quarter tank or below, which is a fire safety rule enforced without exception. The cabin, trunk, and cargo area need to be empty. Terminal staff and Hawaii's agricultural inspectors both check every compartment for personal items, dirt, and organic debris. A clean, empty vehicle with a quarter tank of gas clears this step in minutes.
After You Hand Off the Keys
Once your vehicle is checked in, you receive a booking number you can use to track it through to arrival. From there, our team monitors the sailing schedule and Hawaii arrival terminal handling on your behalf, so you know exactly when to expect your car on the other end instead of guessing.
